Information on ClubFeet in Black and White

Hayley's Story

At 20 weeks pregnant with my first child my partner and I were have a routine scan to find out the sex of our baby. It was there that we were informed that our son had bilateral talipes. ???? What was that was all i could think, nothing could describe that angst that I felt. What had I eaten, done wrong, was it my fault.

These questions soon dissapeared when my beautiful son was born a few months later. His feet didnt llok disfigured and distorted like I had imagined, they were cute and still normal looking feet just inturned and bent in.

It was 10 days after he was born that the orthapedics started casting him. He did really well and 4 months after he had minor surgery to lenghthen his archilles tendon. it was at the first post op cast change that we discovered he had severe eczema which had developed from the casts. This was the end of casting for a while so that the eczema could settle. 7 Months past with no treatment and his feet started to drop down again.

Whaen i next vistited the Dr, i requested he have more surgery (Soft tissue release) because the eczema had become a major hinderance on his treatment.

It was 9 weeks ago that he had the surgery and he has had 2 cast changes. His feet look absolutley AMAZING. They are straight and near perfect. Apart from scaring around the ankle of his feet (which will fade) he is doing awesome. He still has casts above his knees which are stopping him from walking but as soon as those casts come off he will be. He is active, crawling (Very fast) and standing on his knees.

Big thanks to his surgeon in NZ and the team at the casting clinic. He will lead a normal life and he will do anything he wants. I know he will not be held back.

i had my 22 week scan yesterday and was told that my daughter has 2 club feet. no due to womb pressure or positioning. what i am most afraid of is that the club feet are a symptom of a more sinister 'syndrome'. we have had a cvs so know that a number of chromosonal conditions have been discounted but the fear of a 'syndrome' leaves me feeling powerless. i feel we will manage the club feet and believe the prognonsis is actually very good in most cases.

My son is now 16 years old and was born with club feet.It was never diagnosed with an ultra sound so you can imagine the disbelief we had and we thought there is no hope. After years and years of stapping, plasters and eventually surgery Lindsay I think is a success story as he is a keen sportsman he is great at animation drawing and he is my golden haired boy. He is in his 11th year at school and thinks life is great(considering what he has been through most of his)he never complained never whinged he maybe not out of the woods yet as he is still growing but time will tell

I have just given birth 1 week ago and although me and my husband was told that our son would be born with club feet we were unprepared for the serverity of his deformity. We have been given an appointment to see a phisiotherapist at the end of the month. I have come to terms with our sons condition but i think it has hit my husband more than me. I am optimistic about treatment as i have researched what can be done. I would just like to keep in touch with others who are going through treatment and could give me advice and encouragement.

My son was born on August4 2005 with bilateral club feet............To me he is my miracle, he has beaten all the odds that were again him and knocked down every wall ever put in his path.......He has had TODATE 2 tendon releases and one BIG surgery where he needed bone reconstruction done on his heal. I was told when he was born that he wouldnt walk until he was 3 or 4 years old....Guess what his last cast was removed one day before his birthday which was August 3rd 2006 and he was running on his own by September 17.So have faith and don't under estimate the ability of those tiny little creatures....
Here is a little good news for the grandmother.
