Evey's Story
Wow, I never thought I'd be here. Bethie was born 13 years ago this coming Thursday with club feet. The left foot was worse than the right one, but both were pretty bad. Her aunt even mentioned that she could probably learn how to use her feet as her hands - they were that bad.
We had casts from 1 week old until 7 months old. The doctor told us that casts wouldn't help her, but they would keep her feet from stiffening up. She went a month without casting - that was my best month ever. Let's see, colic and casts does not make for a peaceful baby. At 8 months we had her surgery in Atlanta. Absolutely wonderful.
She looked great. Scars and all. She didn't start to walk until after a year old, due to the casts, but once she started, she never stopped. She has won medals in track, completely absorbed in soccer and just finished her first year of cheerleading. She is so fast that her softball team used to chant, "speedy, speedy."
We went to the doctor recently for a follow up...probably the second follow up since surgery. Beth has received disturbing news. I wasn't too happy with the doctor, diagnosing without even taking xrays, so we have another appointment with a specialist. Beth puts pressure on the inside of her foot when she walks. And her heel doesn't touch the ground anymore. We know we will have to do surgery to correct that, but it's the same thing that they had to fix before, so hopefully it will go well. She is having some pain, but she says that she doesn't even think about it. Which makes me wonder how long she has lived with it and thought of it as normal.
So...we are here...researching stories of others so that we can see how others are dealing with things. Until last Friday we were blissfully unaware that there could be problems in her future. Her left calf is smaller than her right, and her right calf is smaller than most other people's. Her feet are kind of flat and humped on top. I love her toes - they point sideways. She has a size 3 shoe right now...and she has noticed that her right foot dictates her size. She never told me that there was even a difference in her feet!!
When we see the specialist, I'll have something more to post. Thanks for letting me share my story.
