Dana Cittadino's Story
My name is Dana and I was born 43 years ago in a small town in Central New York State, with both feet severely clubbed. My toes touched my inner calves.
I have had over 20 operations beginning at 9 months old and continuing until age 30. I have chronic pain, I cannot walk more than a few metres at a time. My feet hurt when walking, sitting and even sleeping. The pain never goes away. My family does everything...cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping. The pain has clearly inhibited my life.
I am now considering amputation. I have seen many surgeons, and living in Canada I am lucky to have access to world-renown orthopeadic doctors, but to no avail. No one can guarantee that after surgery I will be pain free or even be able to walk at all. Ankle replacement was my hope, but I cannot find a doctor ANYWHERE who will perform it on someone my age.
I know of many people who have had children with club feet (I work in the birthing unit of a hospital) and the advances that have been made are wonderful.
If anyone has had amputation surgery, I would appreciate chatting with you. Please email me.
Thanks for listening...
Dana
