Information on Club Feet in Black and White

Wendy's Story

i have club feet
My second child was born with a club foot. Within hours of her birth her foot was put in a cast.

The casts continued until she was about 3 months old when she had the surgery to clip her tendon and was put in a cast for a few more weeks.

Then she wore the Dennis Brown bar shoes day and night for months. Then she got to wear shoes during the day and the Dennis Brown Bar shoes at night.

Her foot was really starting to look good until recently, my daughter is now 16 months old and her foot is starting to turn back in. The problem is she will not leave her foot in the shoes at night.

Her right foot(club foot) is about half a size smaller than her normal foot and she works and works until she gets her foot out of the shoe causing a blister to rub on the top of her left foot.

Does any one have any suggestions? If this continues she will have to have another operation, and I want to avoid this if any way possible.

I have a son Clint. He was born 15 yrs. ago with both feet affected. He was surgical corrected at the Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Clint has played in baseball leagues and on the basketball teams since 4yrs of age. He is 15 now. He has done a lot of growing this past year. His feet give him trouble with cramping. He does get worn down faster than other boys his age, because he does't have the flexibility. He makes that up with his 3 pointers, HA! I have recently returned to the same hospital for another evaluation. They suggested surgery. Using a bone from his hip to help with the arch, and then put his weight back up on his heels and secure that with screws. I am concerned about this surgery. The Dr. says he won't be 100%, also his feet may look better and he will have better balance. Anyone that may have had this type of surgery, I would be glad to hear from you.

My daughter would slip out of her DBs as well. So we tried the AFOs also and there was no difference her feet would still slip out. The best thing that we did was put electrical tape around the top of the shoe and wear socks with rubber writting on the bottom.(Old Navy socks worked the best). But you have to watch your babys feet closley cause if the tape is to tight the feet will swell. Good Luck its frustratin as hell, but you can do it!!!

my son was born with bilateral club foot as well. He is now 4 months old and is getting extremely irritable and fussy because of the dennis brown bar. I try my best to obey the doctors orders and keep it on him but it just breaks my heart. Can anyone offer me some advice as to how i can deal with it. Because it affects the parents just as much as it does the child with the condition.

My son was born with severe bilateral club feet. His right foot is missing two toes. He has had 2 surgeries and is doing great. Dr. Weiss from Children's Hospital in Los Angeles has done wonders. Don't get dicouraged, my son had the casting but never the bars, they put him in AFO's and he has never had a problem. I would talk to your specialist and see if you can try that instead of the bars. The AFO's are alot lighter and more comfortable for them at night when they are sleeping. My son is 15 months and is only wearing the AFO's at night. I hope this can help. Take care.

My daughter was born with bilateral club feet. We were so worried when we discovered it when I was pregnant. However, it has been very easy to deal with. The casts and bar haven't bothered her much at all (she is now 6 months old). To put the shoes/bar on, I find it is easiest to sit down on the bed and lay her down on her back in front of me, with her feet down towards my feet (as opposed to her head at my feet). That puts her at a much easier angle for putting on socks and shoes. Another tip is to put socks on inside-out so the toe seam doesn't irritate your baby's toes.

I am a 28 year old guy who was born with severe bi-lateral clubfeet. I have gone through 8 surgeries, years in casts, shoes, and orthodics. Today I have comparatively little pain and live a very normal life (example: tonight I am playing raquetball with my buddies). I am lucky that I have had access to some of the best doctors in the world...there are a few I would recommend with all my life. As a person functionally living with clubfeet I have a few words of wisdom: 1) never let your child believe there is ANYTHING she cannot do, 2) find the best doctors, 3) I have had eight surgeries. Medical issues are almost a right of passage in my eyes. The only surgeries I remember where at age 9, 13, and 21. The younger in age you perform the operations the easier recovery will be and less will be remembered by Wendy. Please contact me with any questions. oreardon@gmail.com

My son is 2 years old. Both of his feet were club. He went through the same thing your child is and I found it easier on all of us if I put his shoes on after he fell asleep. It would last most of the night. During the day I just made sure that he has a really good pair of shoes on, I even put them on the wrong feet to keep his toes turned out. I felt that this did help, as I was afraid that he wea going to hurt himself when he would kick one foot out of the Denis Browns.

My son is 4 months and currently in the Dennis Brown Bar 23 hours a day. Other moms have suggested duck tape for when he gets older to make sure he keeps the bar in at night. But since I have yet to experience him getting them off... I am not much help!
