Loraine Dewfield's Story
i have club feetI was born 42 years ago with club foot in both feet.
originaly they were strapped, but i gather the consultant who took on my case preffered to operate.
i then proceeded to have corrective surgery from a few months of age which involved tendon transplants, i proceeded to wear casts up until i was about six years of age. i don't know how many ops i had or neither do i remember much from my early years, but my mum has told me how i kept kicking off my plaster casts when i was a baby and hitting them against the cot, which resulted in numerous visits back to the hospital to have them replaced.
i felt embarrassed by my feet in my later years at school and my teens where me and mum had many fallouts over shoes as i wanted fashion ones and mum wanted me to have sensible ones, i suppose thats nothing different with any teenager with perfect feet.
Even now i buy pretty open toed sandals awarw that my feet don't look good in them but i keep hoping!
My right foot looks more normal apart from the scaring, but they have faded a great deal over the years, and i can get away with wearing most shoes/sandals. My left foot though is still badly twisted and is a size smaller than the right.
On the whole though i don't have too much pain in them, lead a fairly active life (walk everyday, cylce every week, swim), hold down a full time job, drive etc.etc, and by the way just had a hip replacement 12 months ago, which apparantly according to my consultant was nothing to do with my club feet.
