Hi there,
My daughter is 2 and a half and was born with positional talipes. This was corrected with massage and manipulation and she has shown no signs of any problems up until 2 weeks ago. She was walking from about a year old and is a really active little girl! Just recently she has started waking in the night crying in pain saying her feet hurt and will not put any weight on her feet at all. I get her up and cuddle her for about half an hour, give her nurofen, wait for the medicine to kick in and put her back to bed and in the morning she is ok again. This has been happening most nights. I genuinely do belive she is in pain due to the amount of distress she is in. Do you think this could be related to the talipes in any way??? Any help would be greatly appreciated! x x

Hi Belle. When I was reading your story I felt like you were explaining my situaion with my son who as well has bilateral clubfoot. Although he is now 3 1/2 yrs old, about 2 yrs old my son began reacting the same. It was (and is) so difficult to "make" a 2 or 3 year old child wear the Ponseti braces at night. I an very aware that wearing them is very cructial in the process to have a positive outcome, and want that positive outcome for my son (who has since hes knew how to talk has always said he wants to play for the SF Giants. We have been following the Posyi method with wonderful help and care from Shriner's Hospital, but I do have to say I 100% agree it is very frustrating whrn you as a parent are told "...i dont know what to twll you, but they must be worn" HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SON WEAR THE BRACES WHEN HE MSKES IT PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DO SO!?

i too would like to hear from anyone who has found some trick or even bribbery they have used on their own child that seemed to be useful. Thank you and OOD LUCK on a speedy recovering for your son Belle!

Hi, I am Madina. I have congenital clubfeet, I had 1 operation and spin frames only on my right foot when I was a child ( it so weird because I have a bilateral clubfeet). It didnt correct my foot. Now I am 34, and my right foot is a little bit better than the left one, but clubfeet still exist in both feet. I do not have pain in my feet but I have a backache, I have a developed scolilosis, and my hip is deforming aside which is disturbing me too much!I temporary live in New York and I dont have here any medical insurences. I visited already a few orthopaedics who told me to do operations for both feet ( but without insurence its impossible) , and only one doctor recommended me not to do operations which could cause pain for the whole life. He advised me to wear pads in the shoes (I usually wear sneackers), and for my back he told me a physical therapy. What you think my feet and hip will deforming? I`d love to hear from anyone who has such problems?

Hi all,

My 2 year old son was born with a right club foot, we started with the weekly castings, the Achilles Tendon lengthening at 7 weeks and then the Ponsetti brace for 23hrs a day for 4 months, after that we were allowed to decrease the time in the brace to nap time and night time sleeping, and eventually down to 12 hrs a day only at night (my son no longer naps so daytime isn't an option).

This went ok for a while, but ever since my son got stronger and older and he started to want to turn over in his sleep, we've been having issues. Wearing the brace and trying to turn over meant he'd get stuck, start screaming and wake up. I used to try propping his feet, or one side up on a pillow to feel less pressure, or between two pillows so he could sleep on his side. After being woken up constantly during the night he now sleeps in the bed with me so that in my half sleep state I can turn him when he wants to change position. Got to love getting kicked with that metal bar all night! We've even continued to let him have a bottle at night, because this is sometimes the only thing that calms him and soothes him back to sleep. So his GP and dentist are giving me a hard time about that too.

Our doctors have not had any suggestions or advice, in fact they all just shrug their shoulders and say "Can't help, just make sure you keep that brace on." I have now had to stop working because I get such a little bit of sleep that I don't really function during the day and my husband has taken to sleeping in the spare room so that he can get some sleep.

All the doctors have said that he will have to wear the brace until he is at least 4, possibly longer. Does anyone have any advice on how to get a 2 year old to sleep with the brace on? Whats worked for you, what hasn't worked?

I feel like we are in the home stretch now and don't want to give up now. The only option if we cant get the brace to work will be surgical and I don't want my son to have any surgeries unless its absolutely essential and certainly not because I selfishly wanted to get some sleep!

For all those moms out there just starting this process, it may not seem like now but the younger they are the easier it is to get them to wear the casts and brace no matter how much it may not seem like it at the time.

Hi there everyone
I am looking for some advice, while I realize that I cannot give the full details and most people on here are not doctors I would very much appreciate some advice to help my boyfriend and his clubfoot ( right foot)
My boyfriend is 20 yo and a very very keen sportsman and with no doubt considering this and his clubfoot this has probably taken quite a big toll on his body, but the thing that worries me the most is that he tells me he is in constant pain and that the only thing that varries is the intensity of it. Sometimes it gets so bad when he's walking he goes completely pale and silent. As far as a know he has had a few operations when he was younger (baby, 7, 11) and then had the growth platelets takens out of his left knee because it was growing faster than his right (13) which has now left him with a lot of pain in that knee as well. So really I need to know what we can do for the mainly for the pain and his quality of life because I hate seeing him so miserable. Thankyou!

Not much you can do about the pain. My advice is to do feet massages every day before and after you go to sleep, and you should probaly consult your doctor for some pain medication, other than that i cant think of anything else. I hope you do find a way to relieve the pain permanently. And if you do find a way out of the pain, you should post your story about it so others will see. :)

I think that you need to get a better doctor/ more kid friendly doctor. If your kid is in pain all the time and is getting blisters from the boot that his doctor gave him him, then he is not a very good doctor. Please look up a doctor that has a good name on the buissness and try not to go cheap on your son's feet, if you go cheap the results from his feet will show it. Please do this for your son, what you do for hom will affect him for the rest of his life and you should strive to make it for the better. Hope i didnt post this too late, sorry:( i really hope your kid does wonderful later in life :D

I was born with club feet 18 years ago, i had underdeveloped calves also. I started to ride my bike every where and pretty soon my calves were slowly building up. Then i started to jump rope a little bit at a time(i was completely horrible at first) until i got better. Then i would walk to the beach where there are huge stair sets and started running stairs every day until i could run up and down it 50 times consecutively. And now i run 3 miles a day and my calves are actually pretty solid looking making my legs appear normal and helps me run normal. Plus now my feet are alot tougher from all of these exersices making it so i could run/walk/hike further than ever. You can achieve normal looking calve muscles, but it does require alot of effort and a change of lifestyle. I hope this isnt too late for you to read this, and if you do than just try hard but of coarse start slow and stretch for a generous amont of time or else you could hurt yourself. I hope this reply helps you as much as people have helped me on this :)

Hi im Tony. I was born with severe bi-lateral clubfoot and had many opps as a baby on each foot. My left foot was always the worst one not growing as much and growing differently. I didnt get hardly any problems until 28 years old where i stood off of the bottom step and my foot broke. The way the foot was , meant if i took a hard step it broke and it wasnt until a year after going through this pain they realised what was happening. I then had an opp to cut some of the bone out.Because of this they have told me i have some dead bones in my foot and 5 years on im in pain every minute of every day with a lot of movement inside my foot.I have been told i need another opp and if its not successfull they will cut the foot off.. Now this has come as a complete shock and is not something i want to happen.I went to Dubai to work for one month this Jan and i was on my feet all day 7 days a week for a month solid and not one day did i have any pain. So do i move away for good leaving behind my friends and family and seperating from my partner of stay in the cold and try my luck at the opps and see how it goes? And if i did move away how long would i have in the heat before i felt any of the pain i feel now ? Also if i go through the opps i cant work so how do i pay for the mortguage and living ?. Is there any help out there? I am pretty lost at the moment on what to do and its really getting me down. Any help and advice would be much appreciated

I was born with 2 club feet, tho my condition is not as bas as yours, i run every day at least a mile to 10 miles, im fine and have no pain as long as i do long achilles tendon and calve stretches. I also suggest because of your condition to research custom made shoes that might help you roll your feet as you run. Plus i worked my way up to running by incresing my calve strength from low impact workout like the ellipticle machine or running stairs, or the bicycle. I also heard that hors-back riding is very, very good for club feet to become alot stonger really fast, making running less painful. Another idea is to go on youtube and look for arch exercises to make your foot stronger. I hope this or at least the other comments will help you :)

I would like to know what some of the things people have tried as they have begun to have clubfeet that have become painful. I am 39yrs and was born with a severely clubbed right foot. I under went heel cord lengthening surgery at 2yrs and at 5yrs, casting until I was 9yrs and reverse last shoes and denise browne brace, and night splints. Other than some stiffness and limited movement have done fairly well until the last couple of years. Now I have so much pain on the outside of my ankle and up the back of my heel and also across the top of my foot both when I walk and when I am sitting, it makes it hard to do much of anything. I really can not walk without pain and my foot has begun to toe in again. What is the common treatment for clubfoot later in life after what was considered a successful treatment as a child? I am just wanting to be aware of some of the options out there just not finding much information on what has been done to help later in life, there does not seem to be anyone treating this.

I'm new to this site, but am glad I found a support group for my foot condition as well. I'm in my mid fifties and can tell you from experience that your calf on the offending foot is not going get any bigger with exercise. I have been doing exercises all my life including swimming. I have excepted the fact that this can not be changed unless through surgery. Heavens no I don't want that. But the lack of calf muscles is part of the deformity. It's not just a club foot the whole leg belong the knew is deformed. Some people do not have a severe cases of this deformity which would cause their calf muscles to be smaller than the normal foot.

I must be one of the oldest club footers! I am 70 and was born with both feet 'clubbed'. Apart from memories of surgery and much time spent in splints (as we called them), I have only limited knowledge of what was done surgically. I now know that my Achiles tendons were 'released' and that I had another tendon resited in both feet but beyond that I don't know! Certainly my life has been affected by this but the repairs to my feet were fairly good and I have been able to lead a relatively normal and active life which included serious cycling and competative sailing.

Now I am having problems. Apart from knee and ankle aches and stiffness, largely controlled by anti-inflams and painkillers, I have recently developed a severe swelling to my left ankle and foot which split the skin on the scar tissue at the operation site for the achiles tendon release. This has developed into an ulcer which is large and very, very slow healing. The ankle is still swollen and painful and I have to use a walking stick to ease the load on it.

I am under a Rheumatologist and a Vascular surgeon at the Kent and Canterbury hospital and have recently had an MRI scan on the ankle concerned. Their diagnosis "a ruptured achiles tendon"! This they say caused a haematoma which burst through the weak scar tissue and caused the ulcer. The ruptured tendon, of course, was deliberate and done when I was about 6 years old and as for the haematome, who knows!

A Podiatrist has recently told me that he thinks the ulcer, (usually caused by poor blood circulation) is a result of the low activity of my calf muscles who's pumping action assists lower limb circulation. Since then I have started a regieme of foot exercises to increase the use of the muscles and I have to report that it has worked wonders! My arterial blood supply to my feet is good and recent Doplers show it a very 'normal'. My next test is a 'US Dopler Veins Legs'to test the health of the veins.

So I seem to have a circulation issue, cause partly by low muscle activity in my lower legs. So I would advise all of you fellow club footers to get into circulation improving exercises (google: lower limb circulation exercises) as early as possible. They are easy and can be done whilst sitting and doing other things. My ulcer is now healing!

As a footnote (lol) I do not suffer from arthritis but do get very stiff in the joints. This is due, I am told, to my deformed feet putting pressure on the other joints in my legs. I am now concentrating on a different walk which involves moving the weight into the inner part of my foot and flexing the ankle joint as I move forward. It is helping a lot!!!

Just found this and thought I'd share...

I'm 30 and I had a clubbed left foot and no heel. I had 4 ops on it, corrective boots and loads of physiotherapy. I used to have problems running as a younger man and got injured a lot, funnily enough on my right leg! Anyhow, I gave up running and took up triathlon and found that the cycling built leg strength which allowed me to run without injury; I also had custom orthotics made for me to run in.

I completed an Ironman at 27 and then ran a 50 mile mountain race this year. Next year I'm doing a 100 mile run in the mountains! Perhaps I'm physiologically lucky but I was brought up with no exceptions allowed for my leg, it was just another problem to deal with!

Hi Sue and Helen.

I just thought I'd drop you a line...

I'm 32 years old and I was born with two club feet though my left was much worse. Like Tom I have small feet with my right being a size 6 and my left a size 4 1/2 and he is right about it being cheaper on shoes/trainers lol. I never suffered from ankle pain like your son has but at his age and still my feet felt a kinda stiffness in the mornings, my father used to joke I looked like an old man getting out of bed, though after a minute or two it goes. I can't give you medical advise but Tom is right it really doesn't hold them back, I mean yes they probably won't be Wayne Rooney but let's be honest that's not a bad thing. I play lots of sports and found the one that suited me best was golf as the footwear was supportive and if my feet ever got sore theirs always buggies :) Im now playing off a 12 handy cap though when I was younger a 6 so not far off pro level.

When I was at school I used to hate wearing two different size shoes as kids can be cruel at times, so after a while I started wearing the same size. To be honest my mother was smart on that one so brought me a pair of cool Nike air trainers then over night kids stopped thinking of me being the lad with odd sized shoes and a slightly different walk to the kid with the coolest trainers :) don't know if what I have said helps but if you would like to know more just ask.

David

P.s Just though there is one bad side to having small feet, the girlfriend pinches your Nikies lol

hi guys just read about you lads.
im 28 years old and i wear six 6(adult)one thing you will find is that they will adapt everything they do to compensate i know i did. sue mentioned about the little one does sports days etc. ankle pain is to be expected our feet arent the same as most. there are things that can be done!! is it worth it maybe. if its a case of the bones in the top of the foot being broken and reset in my opinion no. yes it does mean the foot looks closer to "normal" but in the long term it means increased chance of arthritis which is some thing you dont want. ive always has small feet i trained to be a martial arts instructor, learned to fly plains(i was in the air training corps),2 kids with another on the way. yes scare tissue does make things look/act differently as the skin has been cut and essentially stuck back together. one thing i will say is dont second guess your choice to have the op you done what you thought was right at the time. 2nd guessing will mean you regret it for the rest of your life when you were trying to do what was best for your baby and thats something no one on the planet can blame you for so dont blame yourself. and 1 thing i will say he's 9 that means he has another 11 years to grow. if hes like me he wont have big feet. what that means to me is i dont have to fork out alot of money on big shoes. theres always options out there and yes his left foot will always be different unless it causes problems leave it be. one day i guarentee he will turn round and thank you for doing everything within your power. i hope this helps

Hi I am now nearly 33, and new to the site, Its so nice to have other people to talk to who understand what discomfort I am in. I was born with quite servere bilataral clubfeet, and suffer with pain almost all the time. I started with the casts as a baby adn then had around several operations upto the age of 9, my left foot has a more limited movement than my right foot. At 17/18 I was offered fusion operation to make my feet more flat to floor, instead of all the pressure being put on the outside of my feet, which I turned down being a know it all teenager. I would wear special boots with wedges on the soles up until i was about 23-24, As my feet are so wide and one being a size 21/2 and the a 3, getting the orthopeadic shoes was still very difficult, they even made me a pair which were aweful and being very self contious regarding my feet/shoes/boots refused to wear them. So I put up with trainers and what ever boots i can get to fit. about 6 weeks ago I was out walking with my children and stood on a small stone which broke my 5th metatarsal, on the xray it showed up that there could have been at least 3 other stress fractures that I hadn't realised Id even had, Ive alway had pain, cant do a stand up job, I go to the supermarket to do shopping and then im in pain from that little bit of walk and its getting worse, I just thought It was what I had to put up with. Now the doctor has offered as an option a fusion operation to make my feet more flat to even the weight distribution out so the pressure isnt on the 3rd 4th and 5th metatarsals. I know that it will make the movement limited, A neighbour of my boyfriends boss had a similar operation and had complications and had to have both feet amputated, Is there anyone else out there who has had the operation this late in life can give me some advice..Im hoping corrective footwear will be ok and the op will be my last option. Thank you

im 20 in a month and i just got referred to a podiatrist who will hopefully give me pain killers because i feel ya on the unbearable pain but the walkin in clinic i went to to get referred didnt sound like they wouldnt help me with painkillers, they gave me motrin 800s just because they werent allowed to prescribe narcotics at that specific place, my advice is find a new doctor i dont why these assholes underestimate how much pain club foot causes
